Central / North Vancouver Island
Chapter President: Joyce Taekema
Our next GNABC Chapter meeting will be held on Monday February 11th one week earlier than usual, as the following Monday is Family Day.
We will feature a presentation by Pam Edgar, on behalf of the UVIC Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health, entitled, “Self-Management Programs: Tools to Help Navigate Life’s Rough Patches”.
Pam Edgar’s Bio:
In 1975, when she was 14 years old, Pam was involved in a motorcycle accident. She sustained four compound fractures, a broken pelvis and a severed femoral artery. There were eight hours of surgery, six more within a week, 3 1/2 months in traction followed by four years of surgeries and physio before graduating from high school. Life continued: a job, marriage and a child, then divorce along with the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 1988.
Finding the Self-Management Programs came at a notable time in her life, in 2004. Being able to present tools to people to help them navigate an often rough passage through personal health care and the system it is, has become a silver lining to her story and given value to her experiences.
As well as a University of Victoria, Institute On Aging and Lifelong Health, Chronic Conditions/Pain Workshop Facilitator & Master Trainer, Pam is also a radio personality on Community/Campus Radio CHLY, who hosted the program 'Living for the Health Of IT' for 10 years, a current host/producer of 'Songwriter's Circle', a daughter, mother and grandmother living the best she can with what she's got.
